Iran Hopes to Host 16th NAM Summit

CUBA, April 29, 2009. The Iranian government has reiterated its desire to organize the 16th Non-Aligned Movement Summit of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for 2012. In his statement Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said that Tehran showed its capacity to organize such an important event for the 118 NAM members, considering that it held a NAM working meeting in July 2008.

Mottaki also evoked the active NAM participation of Iran since the triumph of the Islamic Revolution and its defense of multi-lateralism as an alternative for the global economic problems.

Cuba will pass the pro tempore presidency of this forum to Egypt during the 15th Summit in July, at the Egyptian holiday resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.

According to regulations, a troika will be installed formed by the salient president, the incoming president and a future one, that is Cuba, Egypt and a still non-elected member. (Cubaminrex- PL)
